Berlin U-Bahn: Contemporary history in route maps - from 1902 to 2017

In German and English:
The elevated and underground railway began its service in 1902. The route maps reflect the dramatic development of the U-Bahn and world politics. Network expansion, destruction in the war, division and wall construction, network expansion in the West, reunification of the city and new development - all of this is brilliantly documented in the network plans - a journey through Berlin's history through the graphics of the train lines.

With over 90 large-format route maps and city map extracts from 1902 to 2017, this book shows the fascinating history of these small sources of information for travellers. They are unique historical documents and often real works of art.

Short introductory texts introduce the chronological chapters and captions explain the depicted route networks. More than 50 impressive photographs bring history to life. For more than two years, this book was thoroughly researched in many archives, compiled and lavishly restored digitally. The plans and photographs appear in new splendour, many of which have not been shown anywhere since their first publication.

This complex, edited collection, in collaboration with the historical archive of the Berlin Public Transport Authorities (BVG), the collections of the well-known traffic historians Sigurd Hilkenbach and Wolfgang Kramer, as well as the introductory texts of the subway expert Uwe Poppel, result in a history of transport maps which has never been published before in such detail, and which has much to tell.
